Large Zulu Meat Platter (Ugqoko) With 'Amasumpa' Designs, Southern Africa

£1100

Large Meat Platter (Ugqoko). Zulu Culture, Southern Africa

This large, impressive Zulu platter (Ugqoko) was traditionally used to serve meat (especially goat and cattle meat). The platter takes the form of a rectangular bowl with rounded corners, flanked on each end by handles.

The underside of the meat platter is decorated with two V-shaped amasumpa designs. Amasumpa- clusters of raised welts - are a form of Zulu embellishment, which are thought to represent body scarification markings. In traditional houses, the Ugqoko would be hung and displayed on the wall with the decorated underside facing outwards.

This Zulu meat platter is in good condition, and exhibits a beautiful black sheen.

Estimated Period: Mid-20th Century
