This male ancestral figure – was collected by an UK expat living in Tanzania in the early 1990’s but dates to the Mid 20th Century or before. The figure is depicted standing in an upright position on a stool.
Figures standing or sitting on stools, as symbols of high rank and prestige, are a characteristic of figurative sculpture found in Tanzania and further afield throughout Central and West Africa.
