Due to the sculptural formation of the legs and signs of breakage to the base, it seems as though this piece was a fragment of a larger Dogon mask. Over time, the wooden surface of the carved female figure has developed a weathered and worn patina.
This piece was purchased by the previous owner from an antique dealer in Pimlico London in the early 1970's, and kept in a private collection ever since.
