Strands of coloured beads, attached to a leather backing, beautifully decorate the cap of this Maasai snuff container. Crafted from animal horn, the cup of the container features a raised ridge detail which runs around the perimeter of the vessel. Affixed to the body of the container is a long colonial-period chain, enabling the piece to be hung around the owners neck.
The taking of snuff was widespread throughout Southern and Eastern Africa, in which snuff containers were often treasured personal possessions.
