Seated Couple. Dogon Culture, Mali

This figurative piece, thick with accumulated sacrificial material, was most likely used by its owner/s in a sacrificial context, such as a family shrine. It depicts a couple, each seated on a stool, with interlocking arms. The joining together of the male and female figure is symbolic of the procreation and sustenance of life.
