1960's - 1970's Turkana Doll, Northern Kenya

£380

1960's - 1970's Doll Figure. Turkana Culture, Northern Kenya

This Turkana doll depicts a female figure positioned in an upright stance. The figure has a pair of white beaded eyes, and attached fibre strands serve as the figure’s hair. Strings of sewn-together beads adorn the neck of the figure. The doll has an oily surface patina, and has been wrapped in animal hide.

Turkana dolls were traditionally carved by older male relatives. According to Turkana beliefs, if a girl treated her doll like a real baby, she would successfully bear a child.

Estimated Period: 1960’s – 1970’s
