Carved from hard wood, this mother and child figure has a wonderful primal presence. The figure's slightly bent knees convey the sense of a mother supporting the weight of her baby. The mother rests her hands on her belly in a gesture that emphasises maternity. Tightly clinging to her back is a small child, who wraps its legs around her mother's waist, and nestles its head into the mother's shoulder. The figure's roughly cut and worn surface compliments the presence of the piece.
