Zulu Milk Pail ('Ithunga'), Southern Africa

£580

Milk Pail (Ithunga). Zulu Culture, Southern Africa

Commissioned by the male heads of homesteads among the Zulu, milk pails such as this, called Ithunga feature lug handles that are used for gripping and carrying the tall, narrow vessel during the process of collecting milk. Milking is carried out by young boys who hold the pails between their legs.

On either side of this Ithunga are four lug handles, carved in high relief. The lower two handles exhibit a diamond-shaped motif, 'amasumpa' and refer to the female scarification patterns.
