These anthropomorphic fired terracotta pots are testament to the rich figurative pottery tradition of the Zande Kingdom. Each pot is surmounted by a human head, a male and female respectively. Both pots are the skilful work of a single Zande artist.
The slightly larger scale of the ‘female’ pot in relation to the ‘male’ projects her significance. Traditionally, pots like this pair did not have a function purpose, rather they were treasured by the Zande royalty for their artistic qualities and brought out and displayed only on ceremonial occasions.
Estimated Period: 1940's - 1950's.
