Elder's Prestige Hatchet With Double-Figurative Feature. Dogon Culture, Mali

This wooden hatchet with a metal blade would have been carried by a Dogon elder, resting on his shoulder, as a symbol of prestige. The hatchet is adorned with dangling strands of early glass beads and a band of cowrie shells. A metal ring is attached below the head of the figure.
