A wonderful old mask with a amazing primal expression. Exhibiting great age, likely turn of the 20th Century or before, with a deep encrusted and worn patina. Originating from the Sukuma or Ziba cultures of Western Tanzania, with possibly some Eastern DRC cultural influence.
The mask has a unusual elongated forehead, with prominent brow and nose. Decorating the edges of mask's eyes and mouth are traces of red paint, a single tooth remains lodged in its upper jaw. Carved from a dense hard wood the surface is encrusted and deeply worn, the back of the mask shows extensive signs of use, developing over time a dark chocolate-like worn patina.
