This mask, from Ukerewe Island on Lake Victoria, is a rare example. This impressive mask, though collected from the island in recent times, shows good signs of age and use.
Few examples of traditional art from this remote island in Tanzania have been published. One known mask, from the Allan Stone Collection, sold at Sotheby's New York in 2013. Occasionally, tall wooden Kerewe shields decorated with triangular designs have been found, and at times, large wooden figures - stylistically similar to figures from the neighbouring cultures of the Nyamwezi and Sukuma - have been published.
