This comb is crowned by a carved female head with an intricately carved coiffure, adorned with a Christian cross necklace. As a symbol of the Christian faith, the cross likely makes a connection between the owner and her comb. The body of the comb is decorated with a series of fine zigzag lines, and a striking cross-shaped design features on the back of the comb.
Among the Akan, elaborate combs such as this were gifted from men to women to commemorate special events, such as puberty celebrations, weddings, or births.
