This early mask exhibits a wonderful, primal expression with an unusual elongated forehead and prominent stouter nose. Decorating the edges of mask's eyes and mouth are traces of red pigments, and a single tooth remains lodged in its upper jaw. Carved from a hard wood the surface is worn and hacked, the back of the mask shows extensive signs of use and age and has developed a dark weathered and worn patina.
A section of the lower jaw of the mask has broken away a long time ago which in many ways enhances the masks primal expression. It is thought that this early mask comes from either the Sukuma, Zeba or another related culture in western Tanzania or Eastern DRC.
