Wooden Shield. Western Highlands, Papua New Guinea

The surface of this fine Highlands shield has been attractively decorated with natural pigments in red and black whilst leaving other areas in the natural wood tone. A band of woven wicker binding (now broken in parts) is present at the top of the shield.

The back of the shield is is dark and roughly cut as shown in the photos.
