These three baskets, all produced during the 1930's, display a variety of form. Each woven from grass fibre, the baskets on the left-hand side and centre are Kuba and Shoowa, DRC. and the basket on the right-hand side is Tutsi, from Rwanda.
The Kuba basket exhibits a tiered structure, while the Tutsi basket features a characteristically-Tutsi, conical-shaped lid. The Shoowa basket exhibits a flat, circular form and has been embellished in the style of cut-pile embroidered Shoowa status cloths. With knotted stitches coloured with natural pigments, the surface of the basket has a raised, nubby texture, creating a beautiful pointillist effect.
