With wonderful form and impressive in its height, standing 2.6 meters, such ladders would have traditionally been placed leaning to a corner of a mud compound allowing access to either the flat roof or family granary. Granary ladders were used by various cultures throughout the Sahel region, from Mali to Burkina Faso.
This particular ladder, more like a piece of contemporary sculpture, has a slightly bent form that follows the natural shape of the tree it was carved from. Over time it has developed a beautiful honey-like patina on the cut out steps where it has been traditionally used.
