Typically fashioned from a heavy dense wood, an unusual and striking feature about this Dinka parrying shield is its beautiful curved form.
Such shields, referred to as kuerr, were used by Dinka warriors as symbols of status and prestige, and proudly carried and displayed as such. This form of shield was also used in close contact as a form of defence when pole fighting to settle disputes with other Dinka warriors.
