Chieftain's Necklace. Pende Culture, DRC

Two finely carved wooden figurative busts, each crowned with a cross-hatched coiffure, feature at the centre of this Pende chieftain's necklace. Bounding the two figures together is rattan fibre, which has been arranged at the front into a beautiful coiled knot. Around the central pendant, alternating dark and light coloured patterns of early glass white beads and seed pods decorate the strand of the necklace.
