It is not exactly know the traditional use of these old iron sandals but it is thought that they would have been placed in a Dogon cave with the purpose being that they would aid with the transition to the ancestral after life. They were certainly not made to wear. They may also have been connected in a ritual purpose to the 'Hogon'. The thin iron surface is deeply corroded from age and being exposed to the natural elements.
