The elongated stem of this Zulu pipe has been beautifully decorated with early glass beads, which have been arranged into patterns of beaded bands. Alternations of translucent late-nineteenth century red (white heart), blue, white and black beads embellish the entirety of the long stem, leaving only the carved wooden mouthpiece and head exposed. Affixed to the stem of the pipe are two twisted strands of beads in the same colours, which would have possibly served as a handle for carrying the pipe.
