This type of crown featuring a house - likely a representation of a Kuba royal dwelling - is one of the rarest types of head adornments in the Kuba culture.
This 1940's chieftain's head adornment has been decorated with early white, transparent, blue and black beads, along with cowrie shells which cover the fibre extension that would have secured the piece to the top of the wearers head.
