Containers such as this were used by a traditional healer to cure aliments by many cultures running down the eastern coastline of Tanzania.
This example shows a nicely carved wooden stopper featuring a female figure with a sweeping hairstyle standing upright and clasping her hands to her front. The stopper fits in neatly to the calabash container which has been decorated with strands of early glass beads. Similar glass beads of transparent red and green also decorate the neck of the female figure.
