FINELY WOVEN GRASS FIBER BASKETS. TUTSI, BASKETS

£650. £450. £670

Fine Grass Fibre Baskets. Tutsi Culture, Rwanda

This group comprises three finely woven Tutsi prestige baskets, each dating to the first quarter of the 20th century. Woven from fine grass fibre , they demonstrate the technical mastery and refined geometric design for which Rwandan basketry is renowned.

The miniature basket at the centre is a rare example. Finely woven on a tiny scale, height 4.5 cm, it was most likely constructed as a single piece rather than with a separate lid. The slightly larger lighter-toned basket is distinguished by its elegant interlocking pyramid design and is very well preserved. The largest basket, probably intended for storage, features an attractive spiral design encircling the body and is also in good condition.

Together, the three baskets illustrate the sophistication of traditional Tutsi basket weaving, combining functional form with aesthetic refinement.
