A small early 20th Century high back chair with a pleasing form typically carved for one block of wood. The chair has an unusual cut-out and upright back structure with a diamond shaped symbol at its top. The surface of the chair is worn and glossy throughout and in good condition.
High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among different groups in southern Ethiopia -serving as symbols of rank and entitlement during meetings by the council of elders.
