A beautifully formed small wooden Toposa parrying shield with a attractive profile. Running down the centre is a raised vertical ridge, from which engraved geometric decorations highlighted with traces of white kaolin fan out symmetrically across its surface.
The reverse retains remnants of its original decorations, with alternating bands of red and white pigment that have mellowed and faded with age.
Such pieces were carried by Toposa men as important symbols of prestige, identity and status. They were both functional and symbolic.
