FINE MANGBETU WOMANS ADORNMENT 'NEGBE' WITH ATTACHMENT - DRC

£1200

Fine Rare 'Negbe' . Mangetu Culture, DRC

Both elements of this early 20th Century Mangbetu woman's Negbe have been woven and decorated with fine lengths of raffia fibre. The result is a striking visual composition of contrasting geometric designs arranged across the oval form of the Negbe. The reverse of the flat fibre ornament is reinforced with banana leaf and meticulously stitched, demonstrating the skill of its maker. The roll-shaped piece would have been attached to the top of the larger adornment, serving as an additional symbol of status and prestige.

The Negbe was an important symbol of wealth and prestige and was worn only on important ceremonial occasions.
