This Kerebe male figure was found on the island of Ukerebe but was possibly carved or influenced by a neighbouring Nyamwezi carver. Figurative sculpture of any form coming from this region is very rare. This figure has similar sculptural characteristics to the figure coming from the same region and illustrated on page 160 'Africa The Art of The Continent'.
'The production and presentation of such figures probably represented one way in which Nyamwezi traders or trader emissaries were able to enhance their standing with powerful chief's in the lake region'.
