Beautifully Formed Prestige Staff. Hehe Culture, Tanzania
Fashioned from the natural curves of a piece of hard wood with a rich dark patina, the staff captures beautifully the serene presence of a gazelle. Staffs like this were carried in one hand by elders or chiefs with the head of the animal resting on the opposite shoulder. They denoted the higher rank of the elder and were carried during ceremonies and village meetings.
