This striking nineteenth-century shield, made from animal hide of black and white, has been decorated with a plume of bird feathers at the top of the staff and a tuff of hair at the bottom. A further burst of bird feathers beautifully adorns to one side of the circular body of the shield. The staff has a worn and rich patina.
Such shields of this size and shape and with these types of feather decorations probably belonged to a royal councillor.
