Title staffs like this fine example were carried as a symbol of rank and status by the Wahehe and Wagogo elders and chiefs in central Tanzania. Animals are often depicted in this form of staff, the animal shown here is likely a wild hare. Carved from a dark wood, the surface patina is smooth and worn. The staff was carried with the head resting on the owners shoulder.
