This chieftain's head adornment would have been worn as a symbol of prestige and title. Knob-like extensions feature at the front, back and top of the headpiece. The surface of the hat has been beautifully and intricately embellished with beads of brightly coloured geometric patterns in which triangular-shaped designs radiate down from the central finial.
As a visual metaphor for political power, and the wealth and prestige associated with leadership, such head adornments formed an important part of Yaka royal regalia.
