£1250

Two Fine Bark and Raffia Fibre 'Negbe'. Mangbetu Culture, DRC

A rare two-part Mangbetu Negbe. The flat, oval-shaped ornament, skilfully woven from raffia and bark fibre, was attached to the rear of the wearer's costume and served as an important symbol of wealth and prestige.

The accompanying fan-shaped ornament was either worn at the front as a modesty covering or attached to the back and worn by children as a symbol of status and prestige.

The Negbe was an important symbol of wealth and prestige and was worn only on important ceremonial occasions.
