This Mbugu fetish from the Tanga Region of north-eastern Tanzania consists of a carved wooden figure, depicted in a standing position with its bent arms resting on its chest. Attached to the side of the figure is an animal horn, which has been wrapped together with a piece of wood featuring a pointed end at its base. Attached to the front of the horn is a magical bundle, which is now worn and slightly oily with tiny glass transparent beads sewn to the top. Wrapped with a red cloth, the hollow animal horn would likely have had a form of ritual purpose. At the top of the standing figure is a large, deep hole, which would have served a functional purpose - possibly to contain traditional medicines in a dried or powered composition - and the surface of the figure exhibits a layered and encrusted patina.
