The head and body of this Kaguru figure have been tightly wrapped and bound with animal hide, which has developed a hard, encrusted surface through years of traditional use. The head, with its white beaded eyes, displays a deep, lustrous patina. The figure stands upright with its hands held close to its sides.
The practice of wrapping such figures in cloth or animal hide is also found among neighbouring cultures in the Tanga region of north-eastern Tanzania.
Accompanying the photographs of this piece is a further image showing the fetish figure standing upon a drum within a traditional Kaguru dwelling.
