Carved from a light wood, this early figure from Madagascar depicts a female with her arms bent and resting on her shoulders. Attached to her head is animal hide with some fragments of hair, and underneath, a cloth netting material.
The skirt of the figure has been decorated with natural red and yellow coloured pigments, and there are missing sections to each leg where it seems the piece was placed in the ground. On the back of the figure (lower leg) is a collection number, and throughout, the surface of the piece exhibits a slightly encrusted patina as a result of age.
