This early mask exhibits a wonderful, primal expression with an unusual elongated forehead and prominent stouter nose. Decorating the edges of mask's eyes and mouth are traces of red paint (no doubt a more recent addition) and a single tooth remains lodged in its upper jaw. Carved from a hard wood the surface is worn and hacked, the back of the mask shows extensive signs of use and age and has developed a dark weathered and worn patina.
A section of the lower jaw of the mask has broken away a long time ago which in many ways enhances the masks primal expression. It is considered that this very old mask originated from somewhere in the East African Great Lakes Region, possibly a cross culture of either the Sukuma or Zeba of Tanzania or a neighbouring culure of North-Eastern DRC.
