A striking Makonde mask with low set ears, slightly bent nose and with old wax markings to the forehead and around the ears, nose and mouth. Such wax decorations used to highlight facial features were commonly found on early Makonde masks from this region. The surface of the mask was originally decorated with red paint now faded and worn. The back of the mask shows extensive wear with a well used patina.
