Featuring spiral-shaped and snake head designs, this finely cast bronze Gan pendant dates back to the nineteenth-century, or earlier, and exhibits a beautiful, encrusted verdigris surface patina. As described in the publication West African Bronze Masterworks: The Syrop Collection (p.149), pieces such as this were buried, dug up and worn again during Gan ceremonies and rituals, in a process thought to empower the piece.
