Early 20th Century Dogon Ancestral Female Figure (Nommo), Mali

£960

Early 20th Century Ancestral Female Figure (Nommo). Dogon Culture, Mali

The stands with her arms raised above her head, in a symbolic gesture to the gods. Its legs are disproportionately short, and bent at the knee in a fashion common to Nommo figures. The figure’s traditional use as a shrine figure is indicated through its encrusted surface patina and the shape of its base.
