Bearing a serene expression, the Madonna holds the baby Jesus - represented with splayed outstretched arms - to her side. Beautifully carved from a hard brown wood, the surface of the figure exhibits a smooth, worn patina.
Such pieces were kept in the traditional household to give protection to the family from harmful spirits.
