This finely carved Makonde Madonna and Child is distinguished by its calm, contemplative presence. The Madonna stands gazing gently downward while holding her child close at her side, creating a powerful sense of protection and intimacy. Particularly striking are the exaggerated hands, a characteristic emphasis that draws attention to the act of holding and nurturing.
Madonna figures such as this were traditionally kept in family homes and, on occasion, in village shrines throughout the Makonde border region of Tanzania and Mozambique. They served not only as expressions of Christian devotion but also as protective figures, reflecting the integration of Christian iconography with long-established traditional beliefs.
Carved from a dense, heavy hardwood, the figure hasdeveloped a rich, dark patina through age and handling. The surface is notablysmooth and worn in areas that were repeatedly touched and carried.
