This Makonde Madonna and Child has a beautiful serene expression. The Madonna stands with a slightly downcast gaze, holding her child tightly by her side. (Note the exaggerated size of her hands holding the child). Carved from a heavy wood the patina is dark,worn and smooth, especially around the areas where the figure was touched and carried.
