A beautiful and finely carved representation of an African Jesus on The Cross. The piece has a lovely rich chocolate-like patina and has many unusual features, for example, at the base of the Jesus's feet is a bird, an angel features above the Jesus's head, at opposite ends of the cross is a horned animal (buffalo?) and a lion. Such pieces were commissioned by a Makonde sculptor and keep in family dwellings in the border region of southern Tanzania as a symbol of faith and also to offer spiritual protection.
