A beautifully sculptured piece of the Madonna and Child, Makonde, Tanzania. Lovely proportions, with a slightly leaning elongated body, note how the Madonna's supporting arm joins the child in one continuous movement. The surface has a deep worn glossy patina, specially around the parts where it has been touched. Such pieces where commissioned and kept in traditional households mainly in the southern border region of Tanzania to give spiritual protection to the family.
