Finely carved from a single piece of dense, hard wood, this Welayta chair is solid in form and comfortable to sit on, with three curved supporting legs. The high, slightly reclining backrest of the chair displays a beautiful decorative feature, comprising four square-shaped cut-out designs.
High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among different groups in southern Ethiopia -serving as symbols of rank and entitlement during meetings by the council of elders.
