The surface on one side of this large nineteenth-century Igbo ankle adornment (ogba) has been decorated throughout with a rich array of finely engraved designs, consisting of circles, dots, lines and triangular shapes. White colouring, present around the designs, are traces of kaolin which were traditionally applied to pronounce the patterns. Made from copper alloy, the impressive size of this ogba was indicative of the wearer’s high-ranking position in her society.
