Small seats are symbols of status and prestige among the Kamba and related cultures throughout Eastern Africa. This early diminutively sized elder’s stool consists of a roughly cut circular seat supported by three small disc-like legs. Patterns of inserted tiny brass circles and strips of iron decorate the surface of the seat in a freelance style, a feature that is rare to find is such early stools. Later examples from the 1930's onwards consisted of small glass beads.
