£540

18th/19th Century Gold Weight Depicting a Leopard Catching an Antelope. Akan Culture, Ghana

This finely cast 18th/19th Century brass weight depicts a leopard with an antelope in its mouth. The leopard has a long sweeping tail with a series of raised circular patterns along its back. One of the leopard’s legs is missing which was probably deliberately removed as a counted weight during the original casting.

Estimated Period: 18th/19th Century
