Small Bronze Casting Depicting a Crocodile. Akan Culture, Ghana

This fine bronze casting depicts a crocodile in a crouched position with a lovely curved body, and open jaw. Fine cross-hatches on the surface of the crocodile's back, legs and feet represent the reptile's scales, with eight raised semi-circular ridges running along its tail. This piece, dating to the early 20th Century, was possibly used as a large gold weight and exhibits a dark golden patina.
