19TH CENTURY CHAMBA IRON CURRENCY, NIGERIA

£950

Fine 19th Century Iron Currency Piece. Chamba Culture, Nigeria

Consisting of a spiral circular body which beautifully reaches out to two flattened wing-shaped finales at each end, this iron currency exhibits a corroded surface that is smoother at its circular body, where it has been handled over time.

The currency is made from what seems to be two pieces – firstly, a central iron core, forming the circular body, which has been beaten and flattened out to create the two wing-shaped finales. Secondly, a piece of long, thin metal wrapped around the circular body, which is thicker at its centre (towards the bottom of the currency) and becomes gradually thicker as it reaches both ends just below the two ‘wings’.

This is a rare form of 19th century Chamba iron currency, which is often not found.
